SHOW NOTES

FestivaLink.net presents Feufollet at MerleFest, NC 4/27/06

In Cajun folklore, feufollet is the word for will-o-the-wisps, the mysterious lights that can be seen hovering near the ground, usually in dark swamplands or marshes. In Cajun Louisiana, as in other folk cultures throughout the world, these lights are thought about in different ways. Sometimes, the lights are fairies or spirits or the ghosts of loved ones. In many folktales, the feufollet, or “dancing fire,” guides travelers to safety, or at least back to the road through the wilderness.

For the young members of La Bande Feufollet, who have been among the most promising exponents of Cajun folk music for the past decade, the songs they play are not unlike these alluring lights, enchanting us, the listener. The Cajun repertoire of Southern Louisiana, for the members of Feufollet, is at once familiar and constantly intriguing, a way to have fun and play music, but also a way to understand and fathom the roots of their culture, their heritage and even their own identity in the wilderness of mainstream culture and society.

Players:
Chris Stafford (vocals, accordion)
Chris Segura (fiddle)
Anna Laura Edminston (vocals)
Josh Caffery (guitar)
Taylor Guarisco (bass)
Mike Stafford (drums)

I'm from down South but currently live in California, and was so happy to find music from home! They make this sound/look easy and always bring a lot of energy to their performances. Great CD!

Saw them on Americana stage, so didn't see this show. Great energy, terrific singing. This is why I love cajun music.

I was there for this show and it was FANTASTIC. High energy and a super cajun sound. Strongly recommend this performance.
