Martha Scanlan's song, Little Bird Of Heaven, is featured in Joyce Carol Oates' new novel of the same name, due out Sept. 15th.
The New York Times best-selling author's new novel is described as "an expertly crafted, lovingly detailed character-driven novel of loss and longing." The song's lyrics appear in the novel's opening epigraph and throughout the story, sung by the young female protagonist.
There is a new recording of the song available for listening here and for download here recorded live at Empty Sea Studios in Seattle with Dirk Powell, who collaborated on and produced The West Was Burning. It will also be available at Amazon.com and iTunes and other on-line outlets. It will also be included in a compilation of new songs by Martha to be released this winter.
Martha Scanlan won the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in 2003 for "Little Bird of Heaven." Her voice was featured on the soundtrack to the film Cold Mountain, when her former band Reel Time Travelers came to the attention of T-Bone Burnett. Subsequently she toured as part of the Great High Mountain tour with Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, et al. Her first solo album The West Was Burning, featuring production by Dirk Powell and soulful performances by Levon and Amy Helm among others, was released in 2006 by Sugar Hill Records to great critical acclaim. She is currently hard at work on a new album--a journalistic appraisal of the modern Western landscape--to be released next year.
