FestivaLink.net presents Gospel Jubilators
At first silent with awe, audiences inevitably rise up from their seats and join in clapping, swaying, and singing - reflecting and amplifying the emotions of the Jubilators’ spirit-filled renditions. Clearly, for the six singers, sharing the music is not just a means of keeping an older gospel style alive; it is a ministry.
Jubilee singing dates to the origin of gospel and the formation of gospel quartets at Southeastern black colleges in the late 1800s and it peaked in popularity in the 1930s and ‘40s.
Bandleader Harry Leak frequently tells audiences, “The only instruments we have are the ones God gave us.” But what glorious instruments they are!
