SHOW NOTES
FestivaLink.net presents the Carolina Chocolate Drops

Think of traditional African-American music, and the genres that come to mind are gospel, blues and jazz; few people think of old-time string band music. But the antebellum combination of banjo and fiddle used to be a tradition in most black rural communities in the South. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are part of the revival of this venerable musical tradition.

Elsewhere at the fest, the Carolina Chocolate Drops performed with mentor, the fiddler Joe Thompson, one of the last black traditional string band players from the previous generation.

Here, they perform as a quartet on the Cabin Stage.

This set is also available with all of the 2007 performances from the MerleFest Cabin Stage.

Players:
Dom Flemons (4-string banjo, guitar, jug, harmonica, kazoo, snare drum, bones)
Rhiannon Giddens (5-string banjo, fiddle)
Justin Robinson (fiddle, 5-string banjo)
Sule Greg Wilson (percussion)

This set really stopped me in my tracks that night. I was so excited to be able to find it here at Festivalink. One of the things I love about Merlefest is finding new artists (at least new to me). One year it was the Avett Brothers, the next... MORE>

BEV  (5/9/2007 10:06:33 AM)
Cabin stage performances are some of my favorites from MerleFest, because it's such a humble setting, and the sets are short, so the musicians really pare their choices down to some of their best. The Cabin stage was the perfect backdrop for a... MORE>
