Newport Folk Festival
Newport, RI
August 4-6, 2006
Of the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959, George Wein wrote:
“A synthesis of traditional sounds with new ideas and perspectives was put into motion in Newport.”
The most influential festival of that era, Newport stays relevant today by refreshing its take on the changing acoustic music scene - and bringing new voices into the creative tradition of its signature Song Circles.
The offerings here are also documentary, with a current performance by western folk singer Rosalie Sorrels, who first appeared in '66; and a performance of Shape Note singing, first offered on the Newport stage in the early '60s.
